Tooth Decay Made Simple!

Tooth Decay Made Simple!

Tooth decay is a term that we all regularly hear, but what is exactly a tooth decay?

We say that a tooth is decayed when it’s “carious”, as “caries” causes tooth destruction and subsequently cavities and decay. Dental caries are the result of an interaction between the tooth, bacteria called streptococcus mutants, and carbohydrates.

Fermentation of carbohydrates by bacteria leads to the production of acids and solubilization of the inorganic content of teeth, which is calcium.

So many factors take part in producing tooth decay, including frequent snacking and drinking sugary drinks, besides not brushing your teeth regularly.

As we all know, prevention is better than cure and especially for tooth decay, as it’s an irreversible process.

How can we prevent tooth decay?

Prevention is by reducing the ingestion of carbohydrates, especially the unhealthy ones, as well as by always keeping your mouth clean with brushing and flossing.

In case you passed this stage, and you think that you may have tooth decay, how can we be sure and know if we have it?

Signs and symptoms of dental caries

Concerning the symptoms, you may have a toothache that may be spontaneous or sometimes provoked by cold or hot foods and drinks, also you may experience teeth sensitivity after eating sweet foods. In a more advanced stage, you can have pain with biting and that may indicate that the infection and inflammation have passed the tooth and went into the periodontal tissues, moreover, brown or black stains might be found on the tooth surface, and then holes or surface breakdowns may appear later.

Once you see any of these signs, you should immediately visit us at Honest Teeth Dentistry, where we  will do a clinical examination and diagnose the case.

What will the dentist see if you have caries (decay)?

The first thing the dentist does is dry the tooth surface as if, after drying, a white patch appears. This means that the surface is demineralized and decay has started, and also the dentist may take a radiograph called bitewing radiograph that will help identify proximal caries.

What is the treatment of dental decay?

In the very first stage of dental decay, which is demineralization, you may use fluoride treatments as they will help restore the enamel surface.

Furthermore, in more advanced stages, restoration by a filling that is made of composite, glass ionomer, or amalgam can be used.

At a certain stage, when the tooth decay becomes more complex and causes more tooth destruction, the only applicable treatment will be fabricating a crown to restore the tooth.

Be aware that when bacteria reach the pulp and cause irreversible pulpitis, a pulp endodontic therapy is required.

Being familiar with the causes, symptoms, and signs of dental caries is the key to its prevention, early detection, and treatment.
