Are You Tossing Flossing?!

If you have ever had food stuck in your teeth (and let’s be honest, we all have!) then you know the feeling of a misplaced popcorn shell or leafy green. The truth is, if you aren’t flossing you’re missing an estimated 35% of the surface of your teeth. That’s a lot of food, bacteria, and plaque in your mouth! With a little help from flossing, brushing and visits to the dentist your smile can get that much closer to a true clean feeling.

Why Should I Floss If I Haven’t Before?

Just like the rest of your body, your dental health changes over time. Sometimes adults who’ve never had a cavity before will wake up with a sudden toothache. Cavities aren’t fun for anyone, no matter your age or background. Keep your smile looking and feeling great by maintaining a good oral hygiene routine.

But What Causes A Cavity?

Cavities happen when food particles and bacteria break down in the mouth, releasing harmful acids that rub against the enamel of the tooth and wear it down over time. Dental caries, or cavities, form when the tooth enamel has eroded into a small hole. If left untreated, they can develop into a painful toothache that needs a root canal to treat. Just because you haven’t had a cavity before, doesn’t mean your teeth are invincible! Keep up with your regular visits to the dentist and remember to brush and floss!

Discover The RIGHT Way To Floss

When’s the last time you and a friend discussed proper flossing etiquette? Probably never. The truth is, not everyone flosses, and not everyone flosses the right way! So if you’re tired of leaving only part of your smile clean after brushing, the following are some great tips to make the most of your dental hygiene routine by flossing like a pro. Grab that unopened dental floss from your last trip to the dentist and get ready to go!

  1. Measure a strand of floss at about 18 inches long and wind the floss with your middle fingers on each hand, leaving a space of about one or two inches.

  2. Keep the floss taut in your grip with your thumbs and index fingers. Slide the floss gently up and down between your teeth. Never flick, snap or force the floss!

  3. Curve the floss around the base of each tooth. This lets you reach just below the gumline to remove trapped debris. Remember to use clean sections of floss as you go.

  4. To easily remove the floss, gently move it back and forth to guide it up and out of the mouth.
